The origin of the Hakata Doll
The Hakata Doll has a very long history.in 1600,when Lord Kuroda moved the country of Chikuzen, many craftsmen were requested to accompany him. The bisque dolls were the creation of these craftsmen and were to provide the foundation of the traditional art from which still exists today. It was the latter half of the Edo period that witnessed a flourishing world of skilled artisans such as Masaki Sohichi(hence the term Sohich yaki or Sohichi pottery),Nakanoko Kichibe and Shirouzu Buhei. The art form proceeded to spread all over nation.
It was during the Meiji period that the dolls received world wide acclaim as they were exhibited at the Paris World Fair and other international expositions. These representative dolls of Japan became known as "Hakata Dolls" and were henceforth exported overseas.
